With Tappan Zee taking the Class A crown last season, Section 1 has now won 34 NYSPHSAA State championships since 1978, more than any other section in N.Y.

Mount Vernon leads the way with 12 State crowns along with 5 Federation titles, their latest being in 2022 with an undefeated season. They are followed by Peekskill with 5 State titles, Alexander Hamilton with 4, and Poughkeepsie and Yonkers with 3 apiece.

Yonkers’ 3 State titles were won in 1927, 1930 and 1932, before the tournament was canceled by State officials. The tournament remained dormant for 45 years before being reinstated.

It is not uncommon to see teams move back and forth between Section’s 1 & 9.

In 2021, Beacon moved from Section 1 to 9. Last season, Our Lady of Lourdes moved to 9 while Pawling also made a switch, moving from 9 to 1.
