NEWS BRIEFS FROM AROUND THE STATE:

When Section 2 won 4 of the 6 State Championships this season, the questions arose whether this was a first. Well, in 2004, Section 1 garnered 4 championships of the 5 played. Mount Vernon, Somers, Blind Brook and Alexander Hamilton were the winners and Fox Lane, another Section 1 team, lost in the semi-finals. Class A Jamesville-DeWitt (Section 3) was the lone non-Section 1 winner. Section's 1 & 2 are the only ones to accomplish this feat.

Eagle Academy II dropped the first game in the Throne National Championships, 85-73, to end their season.

The Red Sarachek National Tournament at Yeshiva University begins today with six NY teams participating.

Long Island Lutheran (21-4), NY's #1 team, will be playing in the Chipolte National Championships. The 4th seeded Crusaders will be facing 5th seeded Columbus (FL) (27-4) at Brownsburg (IN) high school on April 4th @ 12:30 PM local time. The game will be available for viewing on ESPNU.

THE CHSAA/PSAL NYC CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

In the final game in the series, Regis came out on top against South Bronx Prep 67-53. This gave the CHSAA a 2-1 advantage in the event.

This new tournament, which matched the best of the CHSAA against their counterparts from the PSAL, began on Friday when PSAL 2A Champion South Bronx Prep hung on to defeat 1A Champion Luperon 81-77 in a classic battle in a play-in/elimination game for the PSAL.

Archbishop Stepinac (26-4) defeated Eagle Academy II (23-7)   75-64 on Sunday in the large school CHSAA/PSAL NYC Championship Event. This was Stepinac's last game of the season. Due to the Throne National Championship being held on Catholic Holy holidays, the CHSAA bylaws have prohibited them from competing. Eagle Academy II will take their place next weekend.

Epic South (PSAL (3A) nipped McClancy (CHSAA A) 53-39 yesterday in game #3 of the series. which leaves one game to be played, PSAL 2A Champion South Bronx Prep tipping off against Regis, the CHSAA Class B title holder, today.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK:

The PSAL 3A Championship was decided with Epic South (25-5) scoring a 60-52 decision over Brooklyn Law & Tech (25-5) 60-52.

SUNDAY:

In the two NYPHSAA finals, Green Tech (20-6) knocked Bay Shore (26-1) from the unbeaten ranks with a 79-63 victory to claim the AAA title. Sackets Harbor was down 13 with 5 minutes to play and clawed back and missed a buzzer beater that would have won the game. That win made Section 2 the winners of 4 out of 6 NYSPHSAA Championships.

Section II is now 5-0 on the boys side

This section has a lot of high quality teams in every classification; this is not a product of having home court advantage this weekend. Reducing the Section's collective success to that geographical tidbit would be a lazy thought
