This past season, Penfield won their 1st NYSPHSAA title, defeating Amsterdam in the Class AA championship game. Fairport advanced to the Class AAA final last season, losing to unbeaten Albany CBA. In the Class C Semi-final, Lyons lost a close one to undefeated and eventual champion Cooperstown, 66-64.
Situated in and around Rochester NY, Section 5 is the, what I call, "anyone can win" section. They are 3rd in State titles won with 31 with Penfield's victory last season. Along with Section 6, this is one of the two largest sections in the state in regard to participating schools. Avoca/Prattsburgh. Lyons, Charlotte, Notre Dame-Batavia, C.G. Finney and Bishop Kearney lead the way, all with 2 titles apiece.
